Biological monitoring in Tokyo, Japan (October 30, 2012)

Biological monitoring in Tokyo Sea Life Park

Today I went to Tokyo Sea Life Park. I enjoyed seeing large fish such as tuna or shark. Hammerhead shark showed us strange shaped head. I could observe tunas swim at high speed too. Everyone will be surprised to see them. At the Feeding time, we can know how marine animals eat or what they eat.
Do you know that they eat Japanese marine products which were bought at The Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. They are completely same as Japanese eat.

 Tunas swim at high speed.

There is a huge donut-shaped tank (2,200t), where Bluefin tunas swim around freely.

We can observe Penguins not only from above but also underwater.

Amazingly we can touch these fish for real.
Can you touch them?

We can see forein fish.
This is a giant grouper.

There are three stone fish in this picture.
They mimic stone. Can you find them all?

Leafy sea dragon mimics seaweed.
Can you find it?

These fish are living in Japan.
They are beautiful!

These three animals are living in a same nest.

Feeding time for Sharks.

Let's have a lunch here.
There is a nice restaurant in the aquarium.
It is good.

This Ferris Wheel is 117 meters tall.
It is the tallest in Japan.
We can enjoy beautiful night view with fear for height.
Because Tokyo is an economic and political center of Japan, Nuclear power plants are built at far from Tokyo. So people in Tokyo are living usual life as if the accident had not occurred ever before. Japanese think that Tokyo is safe, as it is located far from the Fukushima nuclear power plants and most of contaminants couldn’t reach here.

Fishery products in Tokyo are safe.

Though some people say that official data show that about 40% of fish caught close to Fukushima prefecture are regarded as unfit for humans. It is slightly misleading. Because, contaminated foods are inhibited to sell by the food safety law in Japan.

Last April, the Japanese authorities tried to instil greater market confidence by lowering the maximum permitted concentration of radioactivity in fish and fish products from 500 becquerels per kilogram of wet weight to 100 Bq/kg wet.
This tightening of the threshold immediately re-classified fish previously deemed fit as unfit, even though their actual contamination count had not changed.

It is also worth comparing the Japanese limit with international standards. In the US, for example, the threshold is set at 1,200 Bq/kg wet - significantly more lenient than even the pre-April Japanese requirement.

Does other government have such a strict law? May be not. So I trust Japanese government and I think Japanese fishery products are safe.

I continue to visit to aquariums in Tokyo to see the effects of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident because we can see many kinds of fish which are fed Japanese sea food and living in Japanese water. I think they are sensitive to radioactive materials from environment, so it is important to see their health for our food safety.

Biological monitoring in Tokyo, Japan (October 22, 2012)

Biological monitoring in SHINAGAWA AQUARIUM.

Today I went to SHINAGAWA AQUARIUM. I enjoyed seeing not only various kind of Japanese fish but also dolphin or sea lion which show us elegant performance. Do you know that dolphin eat 10Kg of fish every day.

This Potato bass has lived here for twenty years.

We can see unique creatures from the world.

We can enjoy dolphin and sea lion shows too.
A dolphin eats 10kg of fish every day.
I cannot observe any effect of the accidents for them.
I think food and water in Tokyo is safe.
